Malnourished children are identified by Community Health Workers [CHW’s] who have been recruited and educated by i4Life specialists to screen all the under 5 children at Linda compound for malnutrition. The CHW’s also assist in weekly nutrition and Under 5s clinics in which up to 350 children can attend at any one time.
The identified children are weighed and measured weekly. They are provided a weekly supply of a nutritious feed with a prescribed amount for each day. Attendance at weekly clinics includes a structured education programme focusing on balanced nutrition and the practicalities of achieving this.
The aim is to discharge the child once they have achieved ideal weight for height for 4 weeks. The maximum capacity for the nutrition programme is 150 children at any one time. In 2015 the number of attendees under 5 to the nutrition clinic was 1,500,In 2016, Number of attendees under 5 to the nutrition clinic was 2,300.
The cost of the supplementary feed is €950 per month, (€6 per child per month).
